As The Buttercross Belles are a womens dance team, recruits are expected to be female, with an interest in dance. New recruites must be 18 or older.
No such sex restriction apply to musicians who may be either male or female, with an interest in playing for the dance. Unlike the dancers probationary musicians are expected to be proficient in playing their instrument. New recruites must be 18 or older.
Probationary dancers and musicians are recruited at the start of the practice season, which is September.
Probationary dancers are invited to join in public performances by the Squire, after the Dance Teacher is satisfied she has reached a satisfactory standard. With regular attendance most dancers manage to perform a few dances after just one practice season.
Probationary musician are invited to join in public performances by the principal musician when they have reached a satisfactory level of performance. As the current repertoire contains around 40 tunes it may take some time to master the entire set of dance tunes.
